With eight universities and more than 53,000 students Bochum is one of the biggest places of higher education in Germany. However, Bochum is primarily still perceived as a city of coal, steel and automobile industry.
"UniverCity Bochum", a network of local universities, Chamber of Commerce, City of Bochum and further stakeholders aims at further strengthening Bochum as an excellent city of science and (higher) education. Beside being a network, UniverCity Bochum is also a brand (name) and a strategic approach.
In that sense UniverCity Bochum has recently become a crucial factor in urban development and its politics (and policies). Lars Tata is responsible for the so-called "network coordination" of UniverCity Bochum. He is employed at the City of Bochum, Department of Overall Municipal Affairs of the Lord Mayor. As a spatial planner and political scientist (Univercity of
Dortmund) Lars Tata has been practically engaged at the interface of science and economy/society in different professional contexts for several years.
